Tamil producer and director K Rajan died by suicide on Sunday in Chennai. He was 85 years old. According to a Tamil OneIndia report, Rajan jumped from the Adyar bridge into the river below. Chennai Fire and Rescue personnel recovered his body from the water and sent it for post-mortem examination. Police launched an investigation into the incident.

Reports indicate Rajan was in a car shortly before the incident occurred. Some news outlets reported that he had been staying at a private hotel for a prolonged period rather than living with his family.

Who was K Rajan

Rajan began his association with Tamil cinema in 1983 by producing the film ‘Brahmacharikal’. As a producer, he later backed films including ‘Doubles’ (2000), ‘Aval Paavam’ (2000), and ‘Ninaikkatha Naalillai’ (2001).

He also directed films such as ‘Namma Ooru Mariamma’ (1991) and ‘Unarchigal’ (2005), and worked as a writer for ‘Thangamana Thangachi’ (1991) and ‘Chinna Poovai Killathe’ (1992).

Apart from production and direction, Rajan acted in approximately 18 films. His acting credits include ‘Michael Raj’ (1987), ‘Sonthakkaran’ (1989), ‘Doubles’ (2000), ‘En Sakhiye’ (2000), and ‘Kabadi Kabadi’ (2001). His later acting appearances included ‘Thunivu’ and ‘Bakasuran’.

Rajan served as the president of the Chennai Distributors Association. He was known for speaking openly about actor remuneration, financial struggles in the film industry, and industry politics. He was a vocal supporter of low-budget Tamil cinema, and some of his public remarks drew controversy on social media.

Personal circumstances

Reports described Rajan as living a lonely life in his final period. He had been staying at a private hotel rather than with his family for some time before his death.
