Maharashtra shocker: Women were allegedly dragged, tonsured, paraded with slipper garlands in Ulhasnagar over temple entry dispute

In a deeply disturbing incident from Maharashtra’s Ulhasnagar, several women were allegedly dragged onto the streets, assaulted, partially stripped, their hair forcibly chopped off and made to wear garlands of slippers as part of a public humiliation linked to a caste-related dispute over temple entry.

The incident, reported from the Vitthal Wadi area, has led to outrage after details of the assault emerged, with police confirming the arrest of two persons and the registration of a case against seven individuals.

According to the victims’ family, the attack took place on Thursday evening after tensions escalated between two families belonging to the same community. Relatives alleged that a group first pelted stones at their house before forcibly dragging women from the residence and assaulting them in public.

The family claimed the women were beaten, humiliated and paraded through public areas during the attack. The injured women are currently undergoing treatment at Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar.

Temple entry dispute at centre of clash

Ulhasnagar ACP Shailesh Kale said the violence stemmed from a dispute between two families over entry into a local temple. “A case has been filed at Ulhasnagar Police Station under various sections…The case has been filed against seven individuals, out of whom two have already been arrested. The conflict arose from a dispute between two families of the same community regarding entry into a temple, leading to mutual opposition. Cases have been registered against members of both families involved in the dispute,” he said.

Residents said tensions had been simmering after a caste panchayat allegedly barred a Rajput family from entering a temple in the area. The dispute reportedly intensified after a member of the family attended a community feast organised at the temple despite the restriction.

Victims’ family questions police response

Relatives of the victims have alleged that strict charges were not invoked despite the seriousness of the assault. They also claimed that several accused named in the FIR are still absconding.

Police said the investigation is continuing and further action will be taken based on the evidence gathered in the case.
