Chennai Super Kings’s Urvil Patel produced one of the most explosive innings in IPL history as the batter smashed a 13-ball half-century against Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

The right-hander blazed his way to 65 off just 23 deliveries, hammering two fours and eight sixes at a staggering strike rate of 282.6. In the process, he equalled the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history, matching Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 13-ball effort against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023.

Urvil came out attacking from the very beginning and left the Chepauk crowd stunned with his fearless strokeplay. He became the first batter in IPL history to hit six sixes within the first eight balls of an innings.

After reaching the milestone, Urvil delivered one of the most emotional moments of the evening by pulling out a note from his pocket that read, “This is for you, Dad,” as the packed stadium erupted in applause and chants of his name.

The carnage began against Avesh Khan, whom he smashed for three sixes in a single over, before taking apart Digvesh Rathi with three more maximums and a boundary.

He later launched Mohammed Shami for another towering six while on 48, bringing up his maiden IPL fifty in just 13 balls.

For a moment, Urvil looked set to break Yuvraj Singh’s iconic record for the fastest T20 fifty, which came in 12 balls. Though he fell one ball short of that feat, he ensured his name entered the IPL record books with a sensational knock.

His explosive innings powered CSK to 97/1 in the powerplay, the highest powerplay score recorded at Chepauk in IPL history, surpassing the 91 posted earlier by LSG in the same match.

His memorable knock eventually ended in the 10th over when Shahbaz Ahmed dismissed him with a slower delivery, but not before Urvil had completely shifted the momentum in CSK’s favour with a breathtaking display of power-hitting.
