Chennai Super Kings pulled off a thrilling five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash at Chepauk on Sunday, with Urvil Patel producing a record-equalling 13-ball fifty in a chase packed with drama, dropped catches and late fireworks.
Chasing 204, CSK looked set for a comfortable win after Urvil Patel unleashed one of the most destructive innings in IPL history. Walking in at No.3 after Sanju Samson’s dismissal, the right-hander tore apart the LSG attack with fearless ball-striking and remarkable bat speed.

Urvil smashed six sixes within his first eight deliveries and raced to a 13-ball half-century, equalling Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest fifty in IPL history. He eventually hammered 65 off just 23 balls, including eight sixes, leaving the Chepauk crowd in disbelief.
The emotional highlight came moments after he reached the milestone, when Urvil pulled a note from his pocket reading, “This is for you Papa,” dedicating the knock to his father.

Earlier, LSG had looked in complete control thanks to Josh Inglis, who produced a brutal 85 off 33 balls. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter scored 77 runs in the powerplay alone, the highest individual powerplay score for LSG in IPL history, as the visitors raced to 91/1 inside six overs.
But CSK clawed their way back through Jamie Overton, whose 3/36 included the key wickets of Inglis and Rishabh Pant in the same over. Shahbaz Ahmed later provided a late push with an unbeaten 43 off 25 deliveries to help LSG post 203/8.
Despite Urvil’s explosive start, the chase took a tense turn as CSK lost wickets in clusters during the middle overs. LSG also created opportunities to turn the game around, but poor fielding hurt them badly, with crucial catches dropped by Digvesh Rathi and Nicholas Pooran under pressure.
With 10 needed off the final over, Shivam Dube finished the chase in style by smashing back-to-back sixes off Aiden Markram to seal the win with four balls remaining.
The victory lifted CSK to fifth place in the IPL 2026 standings and kept their playoff hopes alive, while LSG were officially eliminated from the tournament.
Captains take at toss
With rain around Chennai and the red-soil pitch staying under covers before the game, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad said the conditions influenced the decision to chase.
“The wicket was under covers and there was rain around. The pitch does behave differently in day games, but we need to adapt well and then restrict them to a low score. Pretty positive on the way the last 7-8 games have gone for us. It’s been a good turnaround and we’ll look to stay positive,” Gaikwad said at the toss.
CSK, currently sixth on the points table after winning five of their last seven games, have retained the same playing XI as they continue their push for the playoffs. Sarfaraz Khan is expected to be used as an impact player during the chase.
Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, made two changes with Josh Inglis and Avesh Khan returning to the setup. Inglis comes straight into the XI, while Avesh has been named among the impact substitutes.
LSG captain Rishabh Pant admitted his side would also have preferred to field first as they look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
“We would have bowled first as well. We need to win all games, but we must be consistent and play some good cricket. We have had our moments and chances, but we didn’t finish it. We have to give 200% in every game,” Pant said.
LSG head into the contest at the bottom of the table despite snapping a six-game losing streak with a win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their previous outing. The two sides are also set to meet again on May 15 in Lucknow.
