Amid ongoing political crisis situation in Tamil Nadu, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and request a change in seating arrangements in the Lower House of the Parliament for the members of the MK Stalin-led party.
In her letter dated May 7, Karunanidhi wrote, “In view of the changed political circumstances and as our alliance with the Indian National Congress has come to an end, it may not be appropriate for our Members to continue occupying the present seating arrangement alongside them in the House.”

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has witnessed dramatic realignments in recent days after the 2026 Assembly elections, which saw the DMK-led alliance securing 73 seats. The Congress won five seats as part of the alliance, but later shifted its support to actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Notably, the TVK emerged as the single largest formation with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
On Thursday, DMK president MK Stalin chaired a meeting with all the newly-elected MLAs at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai. The party is now preparing to assume the role of the Opposition amid continuing uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu.
The meeting was attended by all victorious DMK legislators. It focused on the evolving political situation in the state, the party’s legislative strategy, and the future course of action following the Assembly election verdict, IANS reported.
Meanwhile, the TMC is attempting to rally support from smaller parties, with reports claiming that it has initiated discussions with the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), each of which has four MLAs in the new Assembly.
