A distinctly Bengali flavour marked the Bharatiya Janata Party’s celebrations on Monday, stretching from the streets of Kolkata to the corridors of the Delhi Secretariat, as early trends pointed towards a strong performance for the party in West Bengal.

The moment carried political weight beyond sweets and snacks. For the BJP, the Bengal trends were being framed as an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance model, with party leaders and supporters calling it a decisive shift in a state long dominated by regional forces.

At the Delhi Secretariat, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta joined her cabinet colleagues for an informal gathering where ‘jhalmuri’ and ‘rasgulla’ were served to mark the occasion. Calling the outcome “special”, she said the results reflected public faith in the leadership at the Centre. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s model of good governance has won,” she said.

In Kolkata, celebrations broke out across multiple locations, with party workers distributing ‘jhalmuri’ and ‘kamala bhog’ and dancing to Bengali songs, according to IANS.

Outside the BJP’s state headquarters, leader Narayan Chattopadhyay and supporters shared food with passersby. “There is an atmosphere of happiness. We will play with saffron gulal. PM Narendra Modi ate the jhalmuri, but it was the Trinamool members who felt the burn,” he told IANS.

Chants of “Jai Shree Ram” echoed at several spots, with one party worker saying, “The people of Bengal have won, especially the mothers and sisters.”

Another supporter said the results showed the BJP’s intent to form the government and “give safety to our mothers and sisters”.

Supporters on the ground described the moment as long-awaited. Mithu Ganguly said, “We have waited for 15 years for this day. We will now show how West Bengal moves on the path of development.”

Aparna Chakraborty added that the party would focus on progress in the state, “especially for the safety and security of women”.

Nandlal Yadav criticised previous governments, saying the state’s industrial strength had declined. “Now, under PM Modi’s leadership, industries will be brought into the state,” he said.

Another worker claimed the results reflected anger against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party. “Today, Bengal has given its reply,” he said.

Celebrations spread beyond Kolkata

Festive scenes were also reported outside counting centres in Durgapur and Ranaghat South. In Howrah’s Shibpur, women supporters danced to Bengali music as results continued to come in.

Priyanka Sharma, a BJP worker, said the outcome was expected. “The way the public had voted this time, we were confident that our government would be formed in the state. The people had decided to bring a change,” she told IANS.

She also referred to violence after the 2021 elections, alleging that BJP workers had been killed. “Today’s win is a tribute to those BJP workers,” she said.
