A Revival in Print: Sri Aurobindo Reintroduced for a New Age

In an age of fleeting attention spans and vanishing intellectual anchors, Sri Aurobindo returns to the foreground through a significant new publication that seeks to reclaim his place in contemporary thought. Kolkata recently hosted the launch of Sri Aurobindo For You, a substantial new volume edited by author and educationist Satyam Roychowdhury. The book is the eighth in his widely regarded “For You” series and was unveiled on April 11, 2026, at the historic Sri Aurobindo Bhavan on Shakespeare Sarani.

Published by Deep Prakashan, the volume brings together a carefully curated selection of Aurobindo’s writings, letters, speeches and conversations, complemented by reflective essays from scholars and researchers. At its core , the book attempts a timely re-reading of Aurobin do’s philosophy, making it accessible and resonant for the modern reader while retaining its spiritual and intellectual depth. It offers an entry point into Aurobindo’s expansive vision of consciousness, human evolution and inner awakening.

It also stands as a tribute to both Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, situating their ideas within the lived concerns of the present. The launch itself reflected this blend of reverence and reflection. The proceedings began with the editor offering a copy at the Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo within the Bhavan premises, followed by floral tributes, a Stotra recital by Prof. Tanmoy Bhattachar jee and a musical presentation by Sant anu Roychowdhury. Speakers at the event included Devdip Ganguly of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, along with a keynote address by Amartya Dutta, Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and a talk by Dr. Pradip Bhattacharya.

Together, they situated Aurobindo’s thought within both philosophical and contemporary frameworks. The formal unveiling of the book marked the high point of the evening and was accompanied by an introduction to its contributors, an eclectic and accomplished group of scholars whose writings enrich the volume. Roychowdhury also shared insights into the making of the book, tracing the intellectual and personal journey behind its compilation. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Biswajit Gangopadhyay on behalf of Sri Aurobindo Bhavan, Kolkata, followed by a rendition of Vande Mataram by Ahana, which brought the evening to a measured and evocative close. In reclaiming Sri Aurobindo for today’s readership, the volume gestures towards something larger, a quiet but necessary return to depth in an increasingly distracted age.
