Amid ongoing polling for the second and final phase of 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that the option to vote for the saffron party was blocked using a tape at several polling booths under the Falta seat in Diamond Harbour.

Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s national IT cell, took to X on April 29 to share a few videos highlighting the option to vote for the BJP being covered with a tape.

“This is what Mamata Banerjee was defending when she spoke up for Jehangir Khan, a criminal contesting on a TMC ticket from Falta in Diamond Harbour. In several polling booths, the option to vote for the BJP has been blocked using a tape, effectively preventing voters from exercising their choice. This is the so-called ‘Diamond Harbour Model,’ the same template that helped Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee secure his Lok Sabha seat,” Malviya wrote on X.

He has asked for an immediate repoll in all the affected booths of Falta seat where these incidents have taken place.

While sharing video evidence, Malviya said that some of these booth include “Falta 144, Part 170, Room No. 2 – Harindanga High School.”

He added, “Booth 189 is also compromised in a similar manner along with several others.”

Who is Jehangir Khan?

Khan was among the small-time politicians in rural Bengal and later became famous in South 24 Parganas. His came into spotlight when Abhishek Banerjee secured victory from the Diamond Harbour seat during 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Recognising his loyalty to the party as well as his organisational work, TMC later appointed him as the President of the Falta Youth Trinamool Congress – a unit that mostly had people appointed by Banerjee.

Heavy security deployment in Diamond Harbour

Earlier in the day, CRPF DG arrived in Diamond Harbour and held a strategy meeting with Police Observer Ajay Pal Sharma amid the ongoing second phase of voting. The meeting was focused on security and smooth conduct of polling.

Recently, a video went viral on the internet showing Ajay Pal Sharma, deployed as police observer in the district, visiting a residence linked to Khan and issuing a stern warning.

“Jahangir’s family members are standing here; tell him properly – we’re repeatedly getting reports that his people are issuing threats; we’ll take strict action over it. Don’t end up crying and regretting later,” he said.

Voting across 142 constituencies in the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections began at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, amid unprecedented security arrangements.

In the first phase, the BJP defended its north Bengal gains, while the final round shifts the battle squarely to the TMC’s strongest belt.

In total, 3.21 crore electors, including 1.57 crore women and 792 third-gender voters, are eligible to cast their votes in the second phase. During the first phase on April 23, a 93.19% voter turnout was registered. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
