Delhi ministers and MLAs staged a symbolic protest during the one-day special session of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, expressing strong dissent against the opposition’s role in stalling the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Cabinet ministers and legislators participated in the protest by wearing black bands, signalling a unified stand in support of women’s rights and dignity. The demonstration within the Assembly premises conveyed a strong political and moral message against what was described as a deliberate attempt by opposition parties to obstruct a historic reform aimed at empowering women.

The Chief Minister said that women’s reservation is necessary as women face greater social barriers and challenges compared to men, and in such circumstances, not just equal rights but special provisions are essential to ensure equal opportunities.

Gupta noted that while a significant number of women are elected to panchayats and local bodies, their representation declines sharply at the level of state legislatures and Parliament.

Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh strongly criticised the opposition for its conduct during the previous Lok Sabha session.

“We strongly condemn the opposition for the stance it took on women’s empowerment. If there had been genuine intent, they would have supported and debated the Bill constructively instead of creating excuses to derail it,” Dr Singh said.

Highlighting the broader implications, he added, “This is not just about a Bill; it is about the dignity and rightful representation of crores of women in our country. The opposition’s actions have once again exposed its anti-women mindset.”

“They speak of women’s empowerment, but when the time comes to act, they step back,” he said.

Referring to recent political developments, he also launched a sharp attack on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, alleging that the AAP leaders were attempting to evade responsibility through their statements.

“Kejriwal has made it a pattern to divert attention from one issue to another. Such actions raise serious questions. I want to clearly state that Arvind Kejriwal has betrayed the trust of the people of Delhi,” he added.
