Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced a batting masterclass to defeat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in a high-scoring IPL 2026 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Powered by explosive half-centuries from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Rajat Patidar, RCB piled up a formidable 240/4 before restricting MI to 222/5 in their chase.

After being put in to bat, RCB got off to a flying start as Salt and Kohli stitched together a 100-plus opening stand, laying a perfect platform.

Salt was the aggressor from the outset, taking apart the MI attack with fearless strokeplay. He brought up his fifty in just 25 balls and went on to score a blistering 78 off 36 deliveries, laced with six fours and six sixes.

Kohli, meanwhile, played the anchor role with a composed 50 off 38 balls, ensuring stability through the middle overs.

The momentum surged further when skipper Patidar walked in. He launched a stunning counterattack, smashing a 16-ball fifty en route to a breathtaking 53 off just 20 balls, putting MI’s bowlers under relentless pressure.

At 115/0 at the halfway mark, RCB looked set to breach 250. However, MI briefly pulled things back, reducing them from 185/1 to 194/3 in a span of eight balls, with Hardik Pandya and Mitchell Santner striking in quick succession.

Despite the mini-collapse, Tim David provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 34 off 16 balls, including a six off the final delivery, to push RCB to a daunting 240/4.

MI fall short despite promising start

Chasing a mammoth 241, MI began strongly with Ryan Rickelton (34) and Rohit Sharma (15) powering them to 62/0 in the powerplay.

However, the chase lost momentum in the middle overs as MI slipped from a solid 103/2 to lose quick wickets, stalling their progress at a crucial phase.

A late cameo from Sherfane Rutherford kept hopes alive briefly, but the required rate climbed too steeply in the death overs.

MI eventually finished at 222/5, falling 18 runs short in what was the highest-ever T20 chase attempted at the venue.
