MP: Toddler trapped inside 200 feet deep borewell brought out dead

A frantic 22-hour-long rescue operation to extract a two-and-a-half-year-old boy fell into a 200 feet deep borewell at a depth of around 75 feet in an agricultural field in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh ended in a tragedy on Friday evening as the child was declared dead by doctors after being brought out.

A frantic 22-hour-long rescue operation to extract a two-and-a-half-year-old boy fell into a 200 feet deep borewell at a depth of around 75 feet in an agricultural field in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh ended in a tragedy on Friday evening as the child was declared dead by doctors after being brought out.

Bhagirath Devasi, who accidentally felling the borewell, was finally pulled out by rescuers at around 6 pm on Friday with the help of ropes, an iron rod and a machine used to extract a borewell motor. Hours ago, an attempt to extract him by throwing a rope inside the borewell to set the kid’s hands loop before pulling him out had failed.

According to the police, the incident occurred in Jhalaria village in the district’s Badnagar tehsil.

Soon after getting the information, Badnagar police station house officer Ashok Patidar rushed to the spot along with a team of policemen and rescuers.

The parents of the deceased child are shepherds from the Pali district in Rajasthan and had arrived in the area with a group of shepherds a couple of days ago.

The rescuers from the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) had dug a parallel hole up to about 40 feet till late Thursday night to rescue the child. However, the drilling had to be stopped as a hard rock came in the way. SDERF Commandant Santosh Jat said on Friday morning that a hammer machine had been called in to break the rocky deposit.

The official said that a camera had been lowered inside the borewell to continuously monitor the child’s situation, and oxygen was being supplied through a pipe to the child.

According to Ujjain SP Pradeep Sharma, teams of the NDRF, SDERF and around 200 personnel were involved in the rescue effort while two ambulances had been stationed at the spot.
