India Gate in the national capital went dark on Saturday night from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm as part of Earth Hour 2026.

Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative that encourages individuals and institutions to switch off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability.

Organised annually by the World Wide Fund for Nature, the campaign began in 2007 as a symbolic “lights-off” event in Sydney and has since evolved into one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental movements.

It now unites millions of people, businesses, and landmarks across more than 190 countries and territories.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the campaign, observed under the theme “Give an Hour for Earth,” emphasising collective action to protect the planet.

In India, prominent landmarks including Rashtrapati Bhavan and other national monuments have participated in similar observances in previous years, reinforcing the growing cultural significance of the initiative.
