Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday congratulated 11 candidates from West Bengal who figured in the final merit list of the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination 2025, noting with pride that nearly half of the successful candidates from the state are women.

On the eve of International Women’s Day, the chief minister took to social media platform X to extend her greetings to the successful candidates, their families and teachers, and said the achievement reflects the growing participation and success of Bengal’s youth in all-India competitive examinations.

“Happy to share one piece of excellent news on the eve of International Women’s Day: our government-trained candidates from West Bengal have fared very well in the prestigious UPSC civil service examinations 2025, and among them our girls have secured about half of the coveted top berths as per the just-published results,” Banerjee wrote.

She added: “Congratulations and best wishes to the successful candidates, their parents/guardians and teachers, and best wishes to all aspirants for future attempts.”

According to the results published by the UPSC, several candidates from Bengal secured positions in the merit list between ranks 40 and 900.

Among them, Diksha Rai secured rank 40, emerging as the highest-ranked candidate from the state.

Others who featured in the merit list include Akash Kumar Rai (279), Vaishna Biswas (367), Goutam Thakuri (432), Debjyoti Halder (443), Debabrata Pramanik (467), S. Nived Kumar (486), Mohsina Bano (648), Juhi Das (649), Kirti Chowdhury (760) and Anniela Sherpa (893).

Ms Banerjee noted that 11 of these candidates had received coaching support from the state government’s Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre in New Town, which was set up to help aspirants prepare for the highly competitive civil services examinations at subsidised costs.

“We are happy that we could provide highly subsidised coaching support to the candidates from our Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre. In our time, we set up this institute and I am feeling proud,” she wrote.

The chief minister also highlighted that nearly 50 per cent of the successful candidates trained at the centre are women, calling it a significant achievement ahead of International Women’s Day.

Ms Banerjee said the candidates are likely to enter premier services such as the Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service.

She further said that apart from the 11 candidates trained at the state-run centre, several other aspirants from West Bengal have also cleared the examination this year.

“Our encouragement and constant care have inspired our youth, and this achievement will in turn encourage many more to aspire for all-India competitive examinations from West Bengal,” the chief minister said, adding that the state government would continue to support aspiring candidates.

For many years, the participation and success rate of candidates from Bengal in the UPSC examinations had been relatively low, drawing criticism in public discourse. The state government subsequently set up the training institute to help meritorious and economically weaker aspirants access quality guidance from experienced civil servants.

The Chief Minister concluded her message by congratulating the successful candidates and assuring them of the government’s continued support, saying, “Kudos to these bright boys and girls for their achievements. The Government of West Bengal is with you.”
