Escalating US-Israel strikes on Iran disrupt Mumbai flights, ground Indian Ice Hockey Team’s European journey

Several international flights were disrupted or cancelled at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Sunday as the tensions escalated in West Asia after US-Israel strikes on Iran, leaving passengers stranded, including an Indian ice hockey team bound for a European championship.

The team, scheduled to travel to Germany for the tournament, expressed deep disappointment after their flight was abruptly cancelled.

“I am from Karnataka. We are an Indian team and were going to participate in the European Ice Hockey Championship. As we were heading to the Championship, our flight was suddenly cancelled due to the war. We are really sad that we will not be able to attend,” said a player from the contingent.

According to players and their families, the team had been preparing for nearly two years for the international event, training late into the night with hopes of representing India on the European stage.

“My son and his teammates were going to Germany to represent India in ice hockey. Unfortunately, due to the war situation, the flights have been cancelled,” said the mother of one of the players. “The children have been working towards this for almost two years, practising every day till 11 pm with the hope of lifting the Indian flag high. There is huge disappointment among the children, parents and coaches.”

Several affected passengers at the Mumbai airport voiced concern over uncertainty surrounding their travel plans as tensions in the region continue to disrupt international air routes.

Airport authorities have stepped up coordination efforts amid the evolving geopolitical situation, while airlines continue issuing advisories on possible rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
