AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi Friday castigated the Gujarat government move to make parental consent of bride and groom mandatory for marriage.

“There has been a change in the marriage law in Gujarat… There is a law in Gujarat that, to stop love jihad, the bride and groom need to have the approval of their parents… This is against the right to privacy…” Owaisi said.

The proposed amendments to the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act requires that couple would have to declare that they have their parents’ consent to get married. Moreover, authorities would also be notifying the parents at the time of the registration of the marriage.

The move comes as part of the government’s attempt to put paid to “love jihad” and address elopement. Deputy chief minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi has argued that the state can no more be a mute spectator to this practice that was spreading like termites and was targeting unsuspecting girls in the state.

What is the new marriage rule?

An assistant registrar would have to cross-check all applications for marriage to ascertain if the bride and groom had informed their respective parents about their proposed marriage. For this purpose the couple would have to furnish the Aadhar details of their parents along with address and phone numbers.

Upon satisfaction about the declaration, the assistant registrar would then notify the parents in 10 days and the marriage would be concluded within 30 days of notification to the local district registrar if all the conditions were met.
