The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch its ‘Parivartan Yatra’ from Cooch Behar on 1 March, covering the entire North Bengal region, with party national president Nitin Nabin slated to inaugurate the campaign.

On Monday, BJP leaders, led by Cooch Behar (Uttar) MLA Sukumar Roy, reached out to traders and residents at Khagrabari Bazar, distributing leaflets and invitations ahead of the yatra. Party leaders expressed enthusiasm over the initiative and have begun preparations to ensure its success.

Addressing reporters, Roy, a former district BJP president, claimed that a large section of people, “disillusioned with the misrule of the Trinamul Congress government,” are seeking change. He said preparations are underway to formally kick off the party’s election campaign through the yatra.

Political observers note that Cooch Behar is likely to witness a keen contest between the BJP and the ruling Trinamul Congress (TMC). In 2021, the BJP secured a significant number of seats in the district, while the TMC lost ground amid internal differences.

Despite appeals from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to maintain unity, factionalism persists in certain Assembly segments, with multiple aspirants vying for tickets.

Meanwhile, TMC leaders have intensified grassroots outreach through government initiatives such as ‘Amar Para Amar Samadhan’. District president Abhijit De Bhowmik said development works are being expedited, including the construction of a six-kilometre road at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore in the Cooch Behar (Dakshin) Assembly segment.

He added that the Cooch Behar Municipality has begun interactive sessions across wards to gather public feedback, with leaders engaging directly with residents to address their needs ahead of the elections.
