In a powerful display of duty and bravery, Army’s sniffer dog Tyson took the first bullet on Sunday while leading troops during an anti-terror operation in Kishtwar and helping security forces neutralise three top Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists, including the most wanted ‘commander’ Saifullah, in the thickly forested area.

The encounter broke out in the Chatroo area after security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation based on specific intelligence inputs.

A joint team of the Counter Intelligence Force (Delta) of the Indian Army, J&K Police and the 2 Para Special Forces moved in to comb a suspected hideout when the heavily armed terrorists opened fire.

Officials said Tyson, a trained K9 attached to the 2 Para Special Forces, was leading the troops towards the suspected location. As the team advanced, the canine came under direct fire and was hit in the leg, effectively taking the first impact of the encounter. Despite the injury, Tyson continued to move forward, confirming the terrorists’ precise position and enabling troops to establish decisive contact.

Security officials credited the canine’s bravery as a key factor in the swift neutralisation of the terrorists. Tyson was later evacuated from the encounter site and airlifted for specialised medical treatment.
He is reported to be stable and recovering.
