Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah today joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of State BJP President Dilip Saikia and BJP MP Baijayant Panda. The major political switch by the senior leader comes ahead of the assembly elections scheduled to take place later this year.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced earlier this week that Borah will be joining the BJP on February 22, following his resignation from the Congress party.

Borah posted on the social media platform X yesterday about leaving the Indian National Congress after 32 years. While he called the decision difficult, Borah stressed that it is one taken with conviction, clarity, and a renewed commitment to serve the people.

We will not suffer any harm, says Congress

Assam LoP and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia said that Borah joining the BJP will not cause any harm to the Congress because the leaders and workers of his constituency, from where he had been preparing to contest for the last three years, did not decide to go with him. According to Debabrata, the workers said that even if he leaves, they will remain in Congress.
