For younger fans, this may sound like just another big-budget film. But for longtime movie lovers, this is a once-in-a-generation moment. The two icons acted together more than a dozen times in the late 1970s and early 1980s becoming the ultimate duo before choosing separate superstar journeys.
Their shared filmography reads like a classic playlist: ‘Apoorva Raagangal’, ‘Moondru Mudichu’, ‘Avargal’, ’16 Vayathinile’, and ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’.
Their final full-fledged co-starrer was the 1979 fantasy drama ‘Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum’, directed by IV Sasi. After that, they slowly moved onto solo projects as their stardom exploded in different directions.
The very last time audiences saw them together was in the 1981 comedy ‘Thillu Mullu’, directed by K Balachander. Kamal Haasan appeared in a cameo during the climax, a tiny but emotional moment that unknowingly became their farewell frame.
The split was not dramatic or bitter. It was mutual and friendly. Both actors simply chose to chase their own creative paths as individual megastars.
Nelson Dilipkumar takes charge this time
Directing this mega reunion is Nelson Dilipkumar, the filmmaker who delivered the massive 2023 blockbuster ‘Jailer’ starring Rajinikanth. That film proved Nelson’s ability to handle larger-than-life heroes and still keep audiences cheering.
Now he has the ultimate responsibility: balancing two legends in one narrative without letting either overshadow the other. That alone is a cinematic tightrope walk.
A star-studded technical team
The film’s music will be composed by Anirudh Ravichander, known for his grand, crowd-pleasing soundtracks in big Indian productions. Cinematography will be handled by Rajiv Menon, while editing is by R Nirmal.
Production design comes from DRK Kiran, with costume design by Pallavi Singh and Amritha Ram. Sound mix and sound design are led by Suren G, with Alagiakoothan S co-credited on sound design. The project is co-produced by M Shenbaga Moorthy and R Arjun Durai.
Where we last saw the legends
Rajinikanth’s most recent outing was ‘Coolie’ (2025), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan last appeared in ‘Thug Life’ (2025), helmed by Mani Ratnam.
Multilingual release and what’s next
The film will release in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi clearly aiming for a pan-India and global audience. Further casting announcements and production details are expected in the coming months.
For now, fans are just staring at that mysterious title “KHxRK” and smiling like they already know something historic is loading.
Piracy is bleeding Tamil cinema dry, theatres are struggling to stay open, and private OTT platforms are calling the shots. Kamal Haasan thinks the Tamil Nadu government is the only one that can fix it.
Rajinikanth has acknowledged that Vijay-led TVK's stunning rise in Tamil Nadu politics after the victory in 2026 Assembly elections as well as his ability to overcome the dominance of the two major Dravidian parties had taken him by surprise.
28-year-old Karthikeyan, a crew member working on Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’ set in Chennai, died after suffering a fatal electric shock during set construction at a private studio in Panaiyur.
