Following Afghanistan’s victory over Canada in the 2026 T20I World Cup, a teary-eyed Jonathan Trott addressed the press, as it was his final game as head coach of the Afghanistan Cricket Team.

“I’ve been very fortunate enough to have coached some really great players, some really good humans, and a good bunch of guys,” Trott said, reflecting on the human side of a team that has changed dramatically since he took over in 2022.

The decision to split up after the T20 World Cup was made months ago, despite the former England batter implying on Thursday that it was not his choice. Trott reflected on his journey since taking over the team in 2022, saying,

“I always feel very fortunate to have had a lot of memories as a player and now as a coach. Beating Pakistan for the first time in a World Cup, defeating England, and winning bilateral series away from home against teams such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa-all of these things.”

The ‘Trott’ Effect

Jonathan Trott emphasised that instilling structure and professionalism can transform a team’s culture, a philosophy he put into practice after taking over as head coach. “If you just add a little bit of structure to the mindset, professionalism, and the high standards that we hold ourselves to, not individuals, it makes a big difference,” Trott told the media at the time.

Before mid-2022, Afghanistan was still a developing cricket nation; everyone regarded them as an underdog who would win one or two games in a major ICC tournament. They never made it to an ICC World Cup semi-final; they finished second to last in the 2015 ODI World Cup, winning their first World Cup match against Scotland, and finished last in the 2019 ODI World Cup, remaining winless.

Initially England’s Graham Thorpe was appointed as the head coach of the team, but unfortunately he was not able to take up the job, so Jonathan Trott was given the ‘opportunity by chance.’

His first assignment as the head coach was the T20I series against Ireland, which they lost 3-2. Looking back at this tour, Trott said, “I remember my first trip when we were in Ireland, and I just saw things that made me realize that these boys are so talented and focused.”

Trott stated during the 2023 World Cup in India that Afghanistan’s spinners, such as Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, would benefit from the development of a few more dependable pacers.

The 2023 World Cup in India was the best tournament for Trott’s men, as they beat Pakistan by 8 wickets for the first time in an ODI, defeated England by 69 runs, and defeated Sri Lanka and the Netherlands by 7 wickets, finishing sixth in the points table.

Afghanistan’s leading run scorers in the event were Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai. In the bowling department, their pacers outpaced the spinners, with Fazalhaq Farooqi taking 6 wickets in 6 matches and Naveen-ul-Haq taking 8 wickets in 8 matches, defying the common perception that Afghan spinners are the sole match winners for them.

Under Trott, the team’s performance improved, leading to historic wins over South Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other teams. They also advanced to the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinals and finished sixth in the 2023 World Cup in ICC fixtures.

In conclusion, Afghanistan has clearly improved its performance on the international scene under Trott’s leadership, achieving more frequent success and high-profile triumphs than in the years prior.

In the post-match conference following their game against Canada in the 2026 T20I World Cup, captain Rashid Khan paid a heartfelt tribute to their coach and was quite emotional to see him leave; after the match, he hugged Trott warmly. Rashid credited Trott for whatever the team has achieved to date, adding,

“We had some wonderful times with him (Trott) since he joined the team in the last four years, four and a half years. I feel like he has done lots of things for the cricket of Afghanistan.”

Trott on his Men and his future

Jonathan Trott, while addressing the press, said, “Nothing is straightforward. You have to understand the person and the background the players come from. They all have very different stories. Being able to play for Afghanistan is a huge honor for them, so motivation is rarely the issue.” He talked about how adding a little bit of structure to the mindset of players, professionalism, and the high standards will make a big difference.

“I remember seeing Ibra (Ibrahim Zadran) for the first time, I remember seeing Azmat (Azmatullah Omarzai) for the first time, and I remember seeing (Rahmanullah) Gurbaz for the first time and thinking, ‘What amazing players.’ Let’s try and build on what we’ve got, this natural raw talent,” said Trott. Now these players have become the backbone of the Afghanistan Cricket Team.

Trott’s initial contract with Afghanistan was for 18 months, but he was awarded a 12-month extension in 2024 and another until 2025. In his final remarks, he expressed optimism that Afghanistan would produce more fast bowlers ahead of the 2027 World Cup, which would be held on seam-friendly fields in South Africa, but also lauded the batting skills that they had gained over the years.

When asked about his future, whether he’ll be joining England in any capacity, he said, “I’m not going to let you put words in my mouth. ” But, I’ve really enjoyed this, and I don’t know what the future holds. Maybe have a couple of days off and see how it goes. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the World Cup goes. Gee, I wish we were still here and able to play in the next round.”

It is not yet revealed who’s going to take the mantle from Trott as the head coach, but we all hope whoever takes up the job will replicate what Trott did, and Afghanistan will taste more success and make their mark in world cricket.
