Uttarakhand’s Tehri Lake, located near the Tehri Dam, the second tallest dam in Asia, will be developed into a global tourism destination, with a ring road encircling the lake forming the lifeline of the proposed master plan to be prepared by the tourism department.

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan on Monday said the state tourism department will prepare a comprehensive and effective master plan to transform Tehri Lake into a world-class tourist destination.

The Chief Secretary instructed tourism officials to come up with a sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient tourism plan of action under the Tehri Lake Development Project.

He directed the state tourism secretary to prepare a detailed master plan before implementing infrastructure development and other schemes in the lake and surrounding areas.

Bardhan said, “A proposal for developing Tehri Lake as a global tourist destination should be formally submitted to the Government of India along with the master plan. The state tourism secretary must appoint experienced consultants to draft the lake development master plan and integrate other departmental action plans accordingly.”

He stressed that the master plan must also incorporate a ring road project encircling Tehri Lake, stating that the ring road is critical for accelerating infrastructure development in the region and improving connectivity.

The Chief Secretary further said that two helipads will be constructed along the proposed ring road. In addition, the proposed seaplane project under the Tehri Lake Development Department’s action plan will also be implemented to boost tourism and connectivity.

He urged the state finance department to coordinate closely with the Tourism, Civil Aviation, and Public Works Department (PWD) to fast-track these projects, with the ultimate goal of developing Tehri Lake into a global tourism hub.
