Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh PM-elect Tarique Rahman. According to government sources, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will also accompany Speaker Birla to the swearing-in ceremony, which will be held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan on Tuesday, February 17.
The Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has invited South Asian leaders from 13 countries to attend the swearing-in ceremony, as per media reports. Prime Minister Modi was also invited to the ceremony. However, according to reports, PM Modi is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron on February 17.

Modi was among the first global leaders to congratulate Rahman after his Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s landslide victory in the 13th Bangladesh National Parliament elections. The BNP-led alliance won 212 of the 299 seats (out of a total of 300) in the recently concluded elections.

“I convey my warm congratulations to Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” Modi had said on X.
Bangladesh has also invited leaders from China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan to the ceremony.
