“The BJP is busy in stopping our dues. I call upon Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, BJP MP from Purulia, to call up the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and urge him to ensure that the criminals involved with the murder are arrested and exemplary punishment is given,” Mr Banerjee said after meeting the family members of the deceased youth in Purulia.

He said a Trinamul Congress delegation along with the relatives of Sukhen will go to Maharashtra towards the end of this month if all the criminals are not arrested. “I am told that one person has been arrested. More people need to be arrested and trials should start. We will have to ensure that the miscreants do not get bail and we will go to the highest court of law in the country to give them punishment. I have assured the parents of Sukhen that we will get every possible legal assistance,” he said.
He said he will urge the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to help Sukhen’s brothers to get jobs in Purulia as they do not want to go back to Maharashtra. Two more brothers of the deceased also work in Pune. After this incident, they do not want to go back to their workplace in Maharashtra out of fear.
Mr Banerjee said Sukhen’s elder had told him that Sukhen used to work in the 3.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. shift. On the fateful day, his elder brother, who has been staying in Maharashtra from 2009 had been calling him up. But his phone was switched off. The next morning, the police called him to inform that Sukhen had received injuries. He went to the hospital and found him dead. “The video has shown how brutally he was killed. I do not want to do death politics, but the police should find out what had prompted the miscreants to kill him,” Abhishek said.
Coming down heavily on the BJP, he said: “It is alarming that in the past few months Bengali speaking migrant workers have been killed in the BJP-ruled states. The pattern has worried all of us. This cannot go on. The miscreants should be arrested and punished. In the BJP ruled states the rapists, extortionists and murderers are arrested and given bail. We will not allow this to happen.”
In this context, Abhishek told how Trinamul Congress leaders stood by the deceased’s grandfather in bringing the body back from Pune to Purulia. He said: “There was a problem with bringing the body back from Pune. Sometimes they said there would be an autopsy and at other times the family was called to the local police station. As soon as we got the news, we stood by the deceased’s grandfather and we arranged an ambulance to bring back the body,” he added.
