Renowned India-based former British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) journalist Mark Tully passed away today in the national capital at the age of 90 years. He was admitted at Max Hospital in Saket, where he breathed his last around 10 am.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the demise of the veteran journalist. He said that Sir Mark Tully’s deep connect with India and its people was vividly reflected in his works. He noted that Sir Mark’s reporting and insights have left an enduring mark on public discourse.

About Tully

One of the longest-serving BBC correspondents in India, Tully was regarded as a radio legend. He served the BBC as the chief of bureau in India for over two decades. Some of his big coverages include events like the Bhopal gas tragedy, ‘Operation Blue Star’, the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, and the demolition of Babri Masjid. He resigned from the BBC in 1994. However, continued to host its radio programme ‘Something Understood’ till 2019.

In later years of his professional life, he worked as a freelance journalist and broadcaster in New Delhi.

As an author, Tully is known for his critically acclaimed books like ‘The Heart of India’, ‘India in Slow Motion’, ‘India’s Unending’, and ‘Non Stop India.’

Tully was also honoured with the Indian government’s civilian honours, such as Padma Sri and Padma Bhushan.
