Gehlot affirms Congress opposition to idea of ‘Disturbed Area Bill’ in Rajasthan

The senior Congress leader said that the BJP government is out to declare Rajasthan – the land of “Padharo Mhare Desh” (welcome to our land) – as a “disturbed state”. The state has an identity and popularity worldwide as the land of rich hospitality, brotherhood, harmonious social ties, and inclusive culture, Gehlot said here in a statement.

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has opposed the idea of enacting “Disturbed Area Act” in the state and declared that the Congress will oppose the move that “will go in the history of the state as a shameful act”.

“Moreover, in Rajasthan neither there have been such situations and circumstances nor there is a scope/room for spread of hate (politics)”, the three-time ex-CM quipped. In their (BJP’s) bid to divert people’s attention from their “administrative failures”, the government is adopting an approach of polarising people on communal lines.

“The difference in approach and attitude is crystal clear. Our government had established the Department of Peace and Non Violence in the government, the first of its kind in the country, for strengthening and encouraging dialogue, love and harmony in the society,” Gehlot said.

“Contrary to this, the BJP government on attaining power in the state, immediately disbanded that new department and now is desperately trying to make the state laboratory for communality,” he added.

“The people of the state want peace and harmony and not the tag of “disturbed area”, neither would we (the Congress) allow the BJP bid to succeed, we would oppose such a move tooth and nail,” he asserted.

The state cabinet, earlier this week, decided to enact “The Rajasthan Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Properties and Provision for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Bill, 2026. The Bill is being formulated to empower the government to declare a “particular area” as a disturbed area, maintain demographic balance in such areas, and protect the rights of permanent residents and their tenants.

The Bill will be introduced in the budget session of the state assembly which is scheduled to commence on January 28.
