United States President Donald Trump once again made a blunt statement today targeting French President Emmanuel Macron. While speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump mocked Macron for wearing sunglasses during his speech at the WEF annual summit. He said, “I called up Emmanuel Macron…I watched him yesterday with those beautiful sunglasses. What the hell happened?”

Yesterday, the French President walked onto the stage wearing reflective blue aviator shades.

This is the latest in a series of reactions between the two leaders over the past few days.

Yesterday, French President vowed to stand up against “bullies”, while addressing the annual summit at WEF in Davos. He denounced Trump’s tariff threats, saying that they openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe, and are being used as leverage against territorial sovereignty. He also mentioned about rising global instability and imbalances across security, defence, and economic domains.

Macron called Trump’s punitive trade actions “fundamentally unacceptable,” and pinpointed that they are against European trade interests.

Earlier today, Trump had also snubbed Macron’s call for an emergency G-7 meeting amid the rising tensions over Washington’s push to acquire Greenland. On questions about Trump attending the proposed meeting, he took a dig at the French President by saying that he will not attend, suggesting uncertainty over Macron’s political future. He doubted Macron would be able to complete his first year of the second term. “No, I wouldn’t do that…Because Emmanuel is not going to be there very long and there’s no longevity there,” he said.

On Monday, Trump posted a screenshot of Macron’s message on a social media platform, showing his invitation to the US President for a G7 meeting after the World Economic Forum.
