SIT summons Udhamsingh Nagar SSP in farmer’s suicide case in Uttarakhand

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Uttarakhand government to probe the suicide of a farmer, Sukhwant Singh, has summoned Udhamsingh Nagar SSP Manikant Mishra for recording his statement. He was named by the deceased in his suicide video that went viral after he shot himself dead at a hotel in Nainital.

The information was shared through an statement issued by the Uttarakhand Police Headquarter (PHQ). “The SIT has issued notices to the SSP Udham Singh Nagar, three Sub-Inspectors, and one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) to appear for questioning and to record their statements. The notices were issued owing to the video circulating in the social media and statements of the family members of the late farmer Sukhwant Singh,” the statement read.

The state PHQ’s statement added that summons were also issued to the registrar and tehsil offices, various banks to obtain relevant banking transaction records pertaining to the allegations of land fraud against the deceased farmer. It stated that authenticity of the transactions and documents will be verified as per the records procured from these institutions.

All elevant records connecting the sequence of the events leading to the death of the farmer have been taken into custody and are under comprehensive forensic examination.

The SIT is persistently analysing call details, CCTV footage, digital evidences, and other technical inputs collected by it through technical surveillance” informed SIT member and Champawat district Superintendent of Police Ajay Ganpati.

It’s noteworthy that 40-year-old Sukhwant Singh of Kashipur’s Paiga Village in the Udhamsingh Nagar district shot himself dead in the second week of the month alleging that he was defrauded of four crore rupees by several persons in a land deal matter. Sukhwant’s allegations were revealed in his suicide note recovered by the police from his clothe and a video admission that went viral after the farmer’s death.

The deceased also alleged that his pleading and complaints to the police against those who allegedly duped him were unheard. Naming SSP Udhamsingh Nagar, SO ITI Police Station, and other staff members, Sukhwant alleged he and his family were harassed by them when went with his complaint seeking justice.
