As votes are being counted for the country’s richest civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP and Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti alliance has crossed the majority mark. The Mahayuti alliance’s performance deals a blow to the Thackeray cousins, who came together ahead of polls after decades in a bid to retain control of the BMC.
The BJP appears set to emerge as the single largest party in the BMC, with its Mahayuti alliance on course to secure a decisive mandate.

The reason why the BMC election is closely watched is due to the fact that the civic body has immense political and financial significance. The BMC has an annual budget exceeding Rs 74,400 crore, and securing control of the BMC has always been the goal of all political dispensations. The BMC elections were held after a gap of almost nine years, which has added to the anticipation.

Across other civic bodies as well, the BJP-led alliance was slated to perform well. In the 29 municipal corporations, the BJP was leading in 909 wards, while its ally, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, was ahead in 237 wards.
Votes were polled for a total of 2,869 seats across 893 wards in the 29 municipal corporations on Thursday. There were a total of 15,931 candidates, including nearly 1,700 contestants in Mumbai alone. Around 3.48 crore voters were eligible to cast their votes.
