Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed former India batter Vikram Rathour as the national team’s batting coach on a consultancy basis in the build-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, to be held across India and Sri Lanka in February and March.
In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that Rathour’s engagement is specifically aimed at strengthening the team’s preparations for the global event. His stint with the national side will run from January 18 to March 10, covering the entire World Cup window.

Rathour brings with him significant experience at the international level. The former India cricketer served as batting coach of the Indian men’s team from September 2019 until July 2024, a period during which India enjoyed consistent success across formats. He is also part of the Indian Premier League ecosystem, currently working as the lead assistant coach with Rajasthan Royals.
The move underlines Sri Lanka’s intent to bolster their support staff with proven expertise ahead of the marquee tournament. Rathour’s appointment follows closely on the heels of another strategic addition, with Sri Lanka having brought in former India fielding coach R Sridhar last month. Like Rathour, Sridhar has been engaged on a short-term, World Cup-focused assignment to fine-tune the team’s fielding standards.
Sri Lanka have been drawn in Group B of the T20 World Cup, alongside Ireland, Zimbabwe, Australia and Oman. The hosts will begin their campaign at home, taking on Ireland in Colombo on February 8.
With the World Cup being staged partly on home soil, Sri Lanka will be keen to maximise local conditions and benefit from the expertise of seasoned international coaches as they look to mount a strong challenge in the tournament.
