Celebrating the two-wheeled heritage

On Sunday, the much-awaited Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally will return for the 55th time. Along with the vintage four-wheeled beauties, the rally will also feature an impressive collection of vintage and classic two-wheelers.

While the rally is best known for its classic cars, the two-wheelers on display tell an equally compelling story. Before cars became common on Indian roads, these two-wheelers were the backbone of personal transport. Motorcycles and scooters carried office-goers, students, soldiers and families, shaping everyday life across decades. Today, they stand as reminders of a time when machines were built with character and purpose.

Motorcycle brands such as Royal Enfield, BSA, Norton and Jawa played a key role in India’s motoring journey. Royal Enfield motorcycles were first introduced during the 1950s, and were known for their strong build and steady performance. They were widely used by the military and police. Later, in the 1960s, Jawa bikes were launched and instantly gained popularity for their powerful engines and distinctive styling. They became especially popular among young riders.

Scooters also transformed urban travel. The arrival of Vespa in India in the early 1960s changed the way cities moved. Easy to ride and reliable, scooters became a preferred choice for families and working professionals. Over the years, these two-wheelers became deeply connected with daily routines, long rides, and personal milestones.

However, they weren’t just easy modes of transport. These vintage bikes represent freedom, independence and craftsmanship. The sound of a single-cylinder engine, the weight of steel frames and the simple mechanics; all reflect an era when riding was as much an experience as a necessity. For many, these machines are tied to memories of first jobs, long journeys and evolving cities.

This rich legacy of two-wheelers will be celebrated at the 55th Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally. Several vintage motorcycles and scooters will be showcased alongside classic cars. The rally will be held on 11 January at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club Polo Grounds. After the flag-off at 9:10 a.m., visitors will get a glimpse into the long-lasting history of two-wheeled motoring.
