Senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, VD Satheesan, on Sunday said that greater representation would be given to women and youth in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
In an interview with a national daily, Satheesan said the Congress party in Kerala would ensure 50 per cent representation for women and youth, both in the party organisation and in the selection of candidates for the forthcoming elections.

He added that this was also the desire of the national leadership of the Congress. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has himself instructed the state unit to ensure adequate representation for women and youth at both organisational and electoral levels.

Satheesan clarified that increasing representation for women and youth does not mean sidelining senior leaders.
“Giving more opportunities to the youth does not mean that those from older generations will be asked to step back. People from the new generation should also get opportunities. We all came up that way. We cannot decide that no one should come after us. There will definitely be greater representation for women and youth,” he said.
He further stated that enhanced representation for women and youth was essential to keep the party active and dynamic.
“It has not been said that the elders will be removed. We will continue to accept the advice and opinions of senior leaders and also field those among them who are capable of contesting. No one will be left out,” Satheesan added.
