Senior journalist, educationist and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University Ved Prakash Sharan passed away early Thursday morning at around 3 am at a private hospital in the Dipatoli area of Ranchi. He was 80.

Family sources said Sharan had been suffering from a kidney-related ailment since 2021 and was undergoing prolonged treatment. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law.

A respected figure in journalism and academics, Sharan served as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University. He was also associated for decades with St Xavier’s College Ranchi, where he headed the Department of Political Science and later retired from service. He also served as Director of the college’s Journalism Department.

In the field of journalism, Sharan remained active for over three decades and was closely associated with the English daily The Statesman for a long period. He was also among the founding office-bearers of the Ranchi Press Club, where he served as joint secretary.

Apart from journalism and academics, Sharan was active in public life and politics. He served as a senior leader and former chief spokesperson of the Indian National Congress in Jharkhand. Expressing grief, Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahato Kamlesh said Sharan’s demise was an irreparable loss to the party, recalling his consistent organisational role and personal guidance over the years.

Condolences were also expressed by several senior political leaders, journalists, academicians and social figures across the state, who described him as an institution builder with a rare balance of intellectual depth and public engagement.

The Ranchi Press Club termed his death an irreparable loss to journalism and education, and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Sharan’s last rites will be performed on Friday at Harmu Mukti Dham. His mortal remains will be kept for a brief period at the Ranchi Press Club premises for people to pay their final respects.
