A special MP/MLA court has acquitted Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan in the case of making derogatory remarks against officials here on Thursday. The case was related to an inflammatory speech, which was registered by Aam Aadmi Party state spokesperson Faisal Khan Lala at Sadar Kotwali on April 2, 2019.

The court acquitted Azam Khan as the prosecution failed to prove the charges.

At the time, Azam Khan was a Lok Sabha election candidate for the first time. He was accused of giving an inflammatory speech. The report filed by Aam Aadmi Party leader Faisal Khan Lala stated that on March 29, 2019, Azam Khan gave a speech at the Samajwadi Party office, the video of which went viral.

Azam Khan was accused of inciting people against the then District Magistrate Anjaneya Kumar Singh and other officials. Azam Khan had said in his speech that these officers wanted to drench Rampur in blood.

An FIR was registered against him under sections related to violation of the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of the People Act.

So far, verdicts have been delivered in 14 cases against Azam Khan. He has been convicted in seven cases, while he has been acquitted in seven cases.

Azam’s lawyer, Nasir Sultan, said that the prosecution failed to present electronic evidence, due to which the MP-MLA court acquitted Azam Khan.
