Punjab Police arrest 76 drug smugglers in statewide raids on 290th day of ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’

The operations led to the arrest of 76 drug smugglers with the registration of 57 first information reports (FIRs). With these arrests, the total number of drug smugglers apprehended during the past 290 days has reached 40,410.

Continuing the war against drugs, “Yudh Nashian Virudh” launched to eradicate the drug menace from the state, the Punjab Police carried out raids at 263 locations across Punjab on Tuesday.

The operations led to the arrest of 76 drug smugglers with the registration of 57 first information reports (FIRs). With these arrests, the total number of drug smugglers apprehended during the past 290 days has reached 40,410.

According to an official statement, the raids resulted in the recovery of 2.2 kg of heroin, 10 kg of opium, 36 kg of poppy husk, 1,010 intoxicant tablets/capsules, and ₹1,520 in drug money from the possession of the arrested smugglers.

Notably, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has directed Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police to work towards making Punjab a drug-free state.

To closely monitor the campaign, the Punjab government has also constituted a five-member Cabinet sub-committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.

More than 100 police teams, comprising over 800 police personnel and supervised by 60 gazetted officers, conducted the 263 raids across the state. During the day-long operation, police teams also checked as many as 264 suspicious persons.

As part of the De-addiction component, the Punjab Police persuaded 25 persons on Tuesday to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.
