Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday sat down for a bilateral meeting at the Hyderabad House here.

Speaking at the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is not neutral and it is on the side of peace, while referring to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “We always support peace,” the PM told President Putin.

“Since the Ukraine crisis began, we have been in constant discussion. From time to time, you too, as a true friend, have kept us informed about everything. I believe that trust is a great strength, and I have discussed this matter with you many times and also presented it before the world. The welfare of nations lies in the path of peace. Together, we will lead the world towards that path. I am fully confident that with the efforts being made in recent days, the world will once again return to the direction of peace,” PM Modi said.

“In recent days, whenever I have spoken with leaders of the global community and discussed this issue in detail, I have always said that India is not neutral. India has a clear position, and that position is for peace. We support every effort toward peace,” he added.

On his part, President Putin said during the meeting that Russia has shared the details of the conflict in detail, adding, “We are working on a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict.”

PM Modi further expressed hope that today’s meeting will lay the foundation of strengthening of economic ties between India and Russia and the same will achieve new heights.

“The world has faced numerous crises, from COVID-19 to the present. We hope that very soon, the world will be free from these challenges, and that the global community will move forward on a path of progress in the right direction, fostering a new language of cooperation. I am confident that today, we will discuss many important global issues,” the PM said, adding, “The economic ties between India and Russia should be further strengthened, and together, we should aim for new heights. With such a highly optimistic approach, we will advance our meeting. This is a strong conviction.”

The Russian President arrived at Hyderabad House after first receiving a ceremonial guard of honour at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and then paying tributes to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.
