Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai Wednesday targeted the Yogi government in the case of the dismissed constable, the mastermind of the cough syrup scandal. Rai alleged that the government is treating the accused like a “damad” (receiving exceptional respect, care, and hospitality) after his arrest.

Rai made this statement while sharing a post on his Facebook page. He wrote, “Dismissed constable Alok Singh, the mastermind of the cough syrup scandal, is receiving VVIP treatment like a ‘damad’ after his arrest by the STF…!”

He further wrote that the UP police immediately crack down on the criminals in minor incidents like bike theft, but why was such respect being given to someone who ruined thousands of lives?

He questioned the government, saying that it is clear that the BJP is openly benefiting from its affiliations, which is why such shameful hospitality is being meted out.

He stated that ”the public continues to die while criminals protected by the government live lavishly even in remand! This is not justice, but Yogi’s protection model”.

The dismissed constable Alok Pratap Singh, a key member of the narcotic cough syrup syndicate, was arrested by the UP Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday morning near the Plasio Mall in Gomtinagar Extension.

Alok Singh is said to be close to former MP and Purvanchal strongman Dhananjay Singh. The STF team is interrogating him.

The Special Task Force (STF) issued a lookout circular against Alok Singh, originally from Chandauli and residing near Sultanpur Road in Lucknow, on Monday. However, Alok had filed an application to surrender in court.

The court sought a report from the police on this matter. Amit Singh Tata and Alok Singh, along with Shubham Jaiswal, the main accused in this case, were operating the syndicate.

The scandal involves the large-scale illegal trade and smuggling of codeine-based cough syrups, which are misused as intoxicants.

The syndicate allegedly used forged documents and a network of shell companies and medical stores to show the syrup was sold legally, while actually diverting massive quantities for black market sale.
