‘Faced lot of struggles to get him educated, cannot believe he was involved in terror activities’: Family of Delhi blast suspect

Delhi Red Fort bomb blast suspect Dr Umar Un Nabi’s family has claimed they were umaware of his alleged terror activities and described him as an introvert from childhood, who always focused on his study and work.

Muzamila, the sister-in-law of Nabi, said she cannot believe he could be involved in Monday’s bomb blast near Red Fort in which 13 people were killed and over 20 others sustained injuries.

Speaking to a news agency, Muzamila said that Nabi, a resident of Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, had called the family on Friday and promised to return home after three days.

“He called on Friday, saying he is busy with examinations and will return home after three days. He was a reserved kind of person right from childhood,” Muzamil said.

Nabi, a doctor at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad, was reportedly behind the wheel of the Hyundai i20 used in the Red Fort blast.

He was allegedly part of the “white collar” terror module busted by the Jammu and Kashmir police just hours before the blast.

According to reports, Nabi went missing after the J&K police crackdown on his associates.

Following the blast, security forces have picked up his family members for questioning.

“They (security forces) have picked up my husband, brother-in-law and mother-in-law. They asked us about the whereabouts of Umar. We said he is in Delhi. Then they took the three away for questioning,” Muzamila said.

She continued, “He wasn’t that kind of a man. We faced a lot of struggles to get him educated.”

The anti-terror agency National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing the blast and several suspects have reportedly been detained.
