A 17-year-old girl was murdered by her parents in Kanti village under Ghurpur police station limits after post-mortem evidence exposed inconsistencies in the family’s version, police said.
The incident occurred on November 5. The father was taken into custody on November 7 and has finally admitted the crime, officials said on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Sarita, was found dead in a field on the morning of November 5 after locals spotted the body and alerted the police. Forensic teams and a dog squad were deployed to the scene.

According to police, the canine unit tracked the scent from the field to the girl’s home, where it lingered, prompting further questioning of family members.
During preliminary interrogation, the girl’s father, Ramesh, told police that Sarita left the house at 5:30 am on the day of the incident and did not return home. The family initially attempted to portray her disappearance as a morning absence, police said.
However, the post-mortem report contradicted the family’s timeline. Doctors concluded Sarita had died during the night and estimated the time of death about 16 hours before the body was discovered.
The autopsy also found partly digested rice in her stomach, indicating she was poisoned or drugged and killed soon after eating, undermining the parents’ claim that she had gone out in the early morning. Investigators say the evidence pointed to foul play by people close to the victim.
Following this evidence, police began questioning the family members separately. The girl’s brother reportedly told investigators that he had advised his father not to take any drastic step but was told to stay silent. The uncle was also questioned but was later cleared of any involvement.
On Friday, police detained the father for interrogation, but he broke down only after hours of questioning. During interrogation, he confessed to planning and murdering with the help of his wife. According to the police, he said they were unhappy with their daughter’s behaviour and decided to “teach her a lesson.”
Police officials said the mother allegedly mixed sleeping pills into the girl’s food, after which she became unconscious. The parents then took her to a nearby field, where the father hacked her to death. They later returned home and pretended that she had gone missing early in the morning.
Yamunapar DCP Vivekchandra Yadav confirmed that both parents have been taken into custody and that legal action is being pursued. The police have described the case as an “honour killing”. Further investigation to gather additional evidence and file the charge sheet is underway.
