After a technical issue developed in the air traffic (ATC) control system, over 400 flights got delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday morning.
According to officials, the snag occurred due to a malfunction in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which feeds crucial flight plan data to the Auto Track System (ATS).

Officials said the problem started around 3 pm on Thursday, when air traffic controllers stopped receiving flight plans automatically on their screens. As a result, they now have to prepare flight plans manually, a slow process that is causing congestion and confusion.
“This kind of technical glitch is very rare. Because everything has to be done manually, the situation at Delhi ATC is chaotic right now,” an official said, as per media reports. Another added that the technical team is working to fix the issue, but delays are likely to continue.
IndiGo posted an advisory on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “Flight operations at Delhi Airport are facing delays due to a technical issue with the ATC system. Flights in Delhi and several northern regions are affected. We understand the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. Please check our website for the latest updates.”
Air India also acknowledged the issue, saying: “A technical glitch in Delhi’s ATC system is affecting flight operations. We regret the inconvenience and request that passengers check their flight status before coming to the airport.
Earlier, Delhi Airport took to X to issue a passenger advisory, stating: “Due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. Their team is actively working with all stakeholders, including DIAL, to resolve it at the earliest. Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”
A traveller on one of the delayed flights told a news agency that the crew asked passengers to remain patient while the technical problem was being fixed.
Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status regularly and reach the airport well before their departure time. Authorities are still working to fully restore normal operations.
