US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that America “lost a little bit of its sovereignty” in New York following the victory of Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral polls.
Calling Democratic socialist Mamdani a “communist”, Trump claimed that New York could resemble “communist Cuba” or “socialist Venezuela,” prompting residents to flee to Florida.

“On November 5, 2024, the American people claimed our government. We restored our sovereignty. We lost a little bit of sovereignty last night in New York, but we’ll take care of it,” Trump said.

Trump described Mamdani’s victory speech as “very angry”, asserting that the NYC mayor-elect needs to be respectful of Washington if he wants to succeed.
“The decision facing all Americans could not be more clear: We have a choice between communism and common sense,” he remarked.
Trump further said that he wants to see New York to be successful and therefore he may help the new mayor “a little bit, maybe.”
“We’ll help them. We will take care of it. Don’t worry about it. You watch what happens in New York, terrible. I hope it doesn’t happen, but you’re going to see it,” the US President warned.
After his historic victory, Mamdani had directly addressed Trump, saying he has just four words for the US President- “Turn the volume up” the hear the loud cheers of the crowd.
Mamdani said he will not mince his words while speaking about Trump but added he will leave the door open to have conversations with the Trump administration.
