Uttarakhand BJP MLA Kishor Upadhyay has admitted that he threatened late former Union petroleum minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna in 1970s to sprinkle uranium in River Ganga if the Himalayan state was not carved out of Uttar Pradesh.

He was speaking inside the state assembly during a special session on Tuesday.

Upadhyay said that he had gone to Delhi to meet the late union minister with demand for the formation of separate Uttarakhand and later questioned what would happen if separate Uttarakhand was not formed.

“We had gone to Delhi with a delegation led by Indramani Badoni to meet Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna when he was union Petroleum minister. He showed mercy on us and we went to meet him in the morning. I was young and lacked wisdom.

“He offered us chapatis to eat and I said don’t do anything but form a separate state for us. Bahuguna said what will you do if I don’t give you Uttarakhand. I replied to him we will not do anything but I will pour uranium in Ganga in Haridwar and you all will die,” he added.

The BJP MLA was speaking over the past 25 years of the state’s existence and vision for its future growth.

Upadhyay, former Uttarakhand state Congress president, further said that it was unfortunate for Uttarakhand that Bahuguna did not become prime minister of India.

It is notable that Bahuguna was an iconic political figure in the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh and considered a close aide of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
