Ahead of the Ghatshila Assembly elections, the local police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals for posting AI-generated content targeting BJP candidate Babu Lal Soren on Facebook. The FIR, registered under Case No. 75/2025 at Ghatshila Police Station, cites violations of the Information Technology Act, 2008, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

The complaint was filed by Babu Lal Soren through Kiran Soren, Junior Engineer at Sinchai Pramandal, Galudih, who also serves with the Flying Squad Team No. 1, Group-A, 45-Ghatshila. The complaint states that the posts manipulated images to defame the candidate, mislead voters, and disrupt the electoral process. The electoral officer directed action following the complaint.

BJP spokesperson Ajay Sah said the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) used “AI-generated lies” to confuse voters. “With its electoral prospects declining, JMM is using fake social media accounts to damage Babu Lal Soren’s image. The people of Ghatshila are aware of JMM’s performance over the past six years, and such tactics will not succeed,” Sah said.

The FIR is being investigated by the Inspector-cum-Officer-in-Charge of the Ghatshila Police Station, Bansh Nr. Singh, with authorities examining the posts for image manipulation and other digital alterations. The BJP has asked law enforcement and social media platforms to identify and block the accounts, and to remove all misleading content, stating that such cybercrimes affect the integrity of elections.

Experts said the case highlights a challenge in Indian elections: the use of AI and digital technology to manipulate political narratives. While political campaigns rely on online platforms, authorities face the dual task of monitoring fake content and ensuring voter awareness.

The incident raises questions about ethical campaigning and cyber governance ahead of elections. BJP officials said voters continue to support Babu Lal Soren, viewing AI-driven misinformation as a tactic from the opposition rather than a threat to the electoral process.

The case may set a precedent for legal action against AI-generated election misinformation in Jharkhand.
