Former India opener Prithvi Shaw roared back to form in style, converting his maiden hundred for Maharashtra into the second-fastest double century in Ranji Trophy Elite history on Monday in Chandigarh.

After a quiet first innings, where he managed just eight runs, Shaw produced a scintillating counterattack in the second, reaching his double ton off just 141 balls in Maharashtra’s Elite Group B clash against Chandigarh at the Sector 16 Stadium.

Resuming on Day 3, Shaw raced to his century off just 72 balls, hammering 13 boundaries — the sixth-fastest century in Ranji Trophy history.

He maintained his momentum, adding 80 runs off the next 54 deliveries to move to 180 before completing his double century in 141 balls, a feat surpassed only by Ravi Shastri’s 123-ball double ton for Bombay against Baroda in the 1984–85 season.

The record for the fastest double century in First-Class cricket by an Indian, however, still belongs to Tanmay Agarwal of Hyderabad, who achieved the feat in 119 balls during the Ranji Trophy Plate tournament earlier this year.

A former India U-19 World Cup-winning captain, Shaw has now amassed 4,631 runs in 59 first-class matches at an average of 45.85 including 13 centuries and 19 fifties, with a career-best score of 379. He has also scored 3,399 runs in List-A and 2,902 runs in T20s.

Having made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in 2017, Shaw switched to Maharashtra this season, seeking a fresh start after a turbulent phase that saw him fall out of national contention and go unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

The move has already paid dividends. Shaw began his stint in Maharashtra colours with a century against Chhattisgarh in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in August and has now followed it up with a historic double ton in the Ranji Trophy.

On his Maharashtra debut against Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram earlier this month, Shaw endured a brief four-ball duck in the first innings but responded with a composed 75 off 102 balls in the second.

Shaw’s brilliant innings finally came to a close on 222, having put Maharashtra firmly in control. The visitors declared their second innings at 359 for 3 in just 52 overs. Set a target of 464, Chandigarh ended the day at 125 for 1, setting up a thrilling final day’s play.
