The case came to light after the doctor was found hanging inside a hotel room in Phaltan on Thursday night. A note written on her palm in Marathi, accessed by the media, alleged that PSI Badane had raped her four times, while her landlord’s son, Bankar, had put her to months of physical and mental harassment.

Police said the victim, a contractual medical officer at a government hospital, had been living in Satara for work. Following the allegations, PSI Badane has been suspended.

An officer involved in the probe said both the victim and the suspended officer hailed from Beed district and were related to each other. Based on the family’s complaint, police have filed an FIR against both men under charges of rape and abetment to suicide.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with leaders cutting across party lines demanding an independent probe and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a fair probe.
