The Congress party today criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims about India’s oil imports from Russia.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, questioned the government’s stance, pointing out that while PM Modi acknowledged Trump’s Diwali greetings, he remained silent on the US President’s assertions about India stopping oil imports from Russia.

“While Mr. Modi conceals, Mr. Trump reveals,” Ramesh said on X, highlighting the apparent discrepancy between the two leaders’ versions of their conversation. According to Ramesh, Trump has now mentioned India’s oil imports from Russia four times in six days, including his latest statement that PM Modi assured him India would stop importing Russian oil.

The controversy began when Trump claimed that Modi had personally assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia. However, the Ministry of External Affairs has since denied any such conversation took place, sparking a war of words between the two countries. Ramesh argued that Trump’s claims raise serious questions about the government’s approach to India’s energy security and its relationship with the US.

He also questioned Modi’s silence on the matter, asking, “Why is Modi not replying to Trump directly? Why is he hiding behind the External Affairs Ministry and asking officials to respond?”

The issue has sparked a heated debate in India, with the opposition questioning the government’s handling of the country’s energy security and its diplomatic relations with the US. As the controversy continues, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to Trump’s claims and address the concerns raised by the opposition.
