The reign of terror caused by a man-eater wolf that had gripped Bahraich district finally came to an end in the early hours of Thursday, as a trained shooter from the Forest Department shot and killed the predator in an encounter.
According to officials, the wolf had attacked a woman and two children in a village on Wednesday night, causing widespread panic. The Forest Department was immediately alerted, and a team, led by former Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ajit Pratap Singh, began an overnight search operation.

Despite attempts to capture the wolf alive, the team’s efforts were unsuccessful throughout the night on Wednesday. At around 4:00 am on Thursday, the wolf was spotted again, and a trained shooter managed to take a clear shot, hitting the animal in the abdomen. The injured wolf walked several steps before collapsing and dying on the spot.
The Forest Department has confirmed that a pack of four wolves has been terrorizing the region. To date, two wolves have been killed in separate encounters, with the search for the remaining two continuing.
This particular wolf pack is believed to be responsible for the deaths of six people and injuries to nearly 30 others in recent weeks, leaving the local population in a state of constant fear. In response, the Forest Department had deployed additional trained shooters from Ayodhya and Unnao to assist in neutralizing the threat.
With the killing of the man-eater, the department has assured the public that efforts to locate and neutralize the remaining wolves are ongoing, and the region will soon be free of this threat.
Villagers expressed their relief and gratitude by chanting slogans in support of the operation team, particularly praising the leadership of former DFO Ajit Pratap Singh for his role in ending the wolf terror.
