The Supreme Court is expected to hear on Friday a plea by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), seeking an independent investigation into the Karur Stampede.

The plea filed by TVK General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna has requested the court to form a retired Supreme Court judge-led panel for an impartial probe.

The TVK has also challenged the Madras High Court’s order to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by the officer of the Tamil Nadu Police, to probe the incident.

“The Petitioner-party as well as its leaders are prejudiced by the order which appoints an SIT composed solely of officers of the State Police, especially in the face of the observations of the Hon’ble High Court expressing its dissatisfaction with the independence of State Police and its conduct, and prejudicial factual findings against the Petitioner,” the TVK said in its plea.

At least 41 people were killed and more than 80 injured in the stampede during Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s rally on September 27.

While Vijay alleged a conspiracy, the Tamil Nadu government claimed the stampede broke out due to lapses in crowd management.

Earlier on Friday, the Madras High Court had constituted an SIT to probe the Krur stampede. The SIT team will be headed by Inspector-General of Police (North) Asra Garg.
