The Assam Police will issue fresh summons to seven members of the Assam Association Singapore after they failed to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of singer-actor Zubeen Garg, officials said on Wednesday.

CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that only one of the eight Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) summoned — Rupkamal Kalita — responded to the notice and appeared before investigators. The remaining seven did not comply with the October 6 deadline.

He said Kalita, who reached the CID headquarters on Tuesday, has been under continuous interrogation for over 24 hours.

“We are in touch with the NRIs in question. Since they are stationed abroad, certain international legal frameworks are involved, and we are communicating through appropriate channels. We hope they will cooperate and join the investigation soon,” Gupta added.

The CID’s investigation has taken a new turn following the arrest of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg earlier on Wednesday.

Sandipan, who is also Zubeen Garg’s cousin, was detained shortly after his questioning by the SIT. “He has been arrested, and the investigation is underway. I cannot disclose further details on the nature of his arrest,” he said.

Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most iconic musicians, died on September 19 in Singapore after reportedly drowning while swimming in the sea. He had travelled to the city-state to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival, a major cultural event promoting the region’s heritage and tourism.

Sources said a yacht had been booked by members of the Assam Association Singapore for a private gathering, where Zubeen and several others were present shortly before the incident occurred.

The singer’s sudden death has sent shockwaves across Assam and the wider Northeastern region, prompting widespread grief and growing public demand for a transparent investigation.

The SIT, formed under the CID, has intensified its probe to determine whether there was any foul play or negligence involved.

Investigators are also expected to question more individuals linked to the association in the coming days as part of their ongoing efforts to piece together the final hours leading to Zubeen’s death.

Zubeen, best known for chart-topping hits such as Ya Ali and Mission China, was not only a cultural icon but also a passionate advocate for Assamese identity and regional cinema.

His death remains one of the most closely watched investigations in recent memory, with the state government under mounting pressure to ensure justice and clarity.
