Meanwhile, the Trinamul Congress staged a demonstration in front of the Maithon dam to protest against the ‘man-made flood’ situation in the lower Damodar basin, a charge repeatedly levelled by chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

The discharge from the Maithon dam was reduced marginally to 6,500 cusecs, while that from the Panchet dam was recorded at 19,000 cusecs at 5.30 p.m. today. The discharge rate at the Durgapur Barrage, controlled by the state irrigation and waterways department, was recorded at 45,825 cusec at 5 p.m.

Sanjeev Kumar, member secretary of the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee, said: “We are set to reduce discharge further once the inflow to the dams from the catchment areas decreases.”
The inflows to the Maithon and Panchet dams were recorded this afternoon at 27,069 acre-feet and 40,041 acre-feet respectively.
