Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, recently revealed why he was absent from the 2025 Emmy Awards. The 52-year-old shared that he had been in the hospital, dealing with health complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Speaking candidly to E! News, Eric called ALS “a nasty disease” and explained that he was in the hospital getting stitches on his head during the awards.

“I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to,” he said. The actor had been scheduled to present alongside his ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ co-star Jesse Williams. He admitted it was a disappointment to miss the chance to reunite with colleagues and be part of the event.
“It would have been great to see Jesse and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues. I thought that would have been a special moment,” Eric said. “I was really upset about it, but there was nothing I could do about it.”
Throughout this challenging period, Eric finds strength in his family. He credited his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, as his pillars of support.
In a June interview, he shared, “I call Rebecca every day. We have managed to become better friends and better parents. She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.”
Despite the difficulties brought on by ALS, Eric Dane remains determined to keep moving forward in his career. “I’m going to ride this till the wheels fall off,” he said. The actor, who recently starred in ‘Countdown’, emphasized that maintaining a positive mindset is crucial. “My spirit is always pretty buoyant, so at the end of the day, that’s all that matters,” he added.
